The Competitive Advantage of Nations

In the 03/1990 issue of HBR [https://lnkd.in/eN9rsvez], Michael Porter wrote:

”National prosperity is created, not inherited. It does not grow out of a country’s natural endowments, its labor pool, its interest rates, or its currency’s value, as classical economics insists. A nation’s competitiveness depends on the capacity of its industry to innovate and upgrade. Companies gain advantage against the world’s best competitors because of pressure and challenge. They benefit from having strong domestic rivals, aggressive home-based suppliers, and demanding local customers.”

In the race for technological leadership, the U.S. has ceded our national competitive advantage to China in crucial clean energy areas like EVs, batteries, and nuclear energy.

The energy transition from oil and gas to cleaner sectors plays into China’s strength today. Hence, coming from a “challenger” position, US utilities will need a coherent strategy for innovation, upgrades, and commercial scaling.. Without a leadership playbook relevant to today’s realities, companies cannot achieve competitive success.
